Halloween Walk 2019

Despite the cold and wet weather, thousands of Leaf Peepers and Trick-or-Treaters flocked to High Cliff State Park for the 2019 Halloween Walk. Our daughter Ams brought a school friend along, and we arrived on Friday evening. We set up camp and enjoyed a nice campfire to take the chill off. Before we knew it he night was over.

We woke to a cold but beautiful morning, and the girls helped me make chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. I also served bacon, eggs and bagels. After breakfast we decorated our campsite and felt ready for the fun to begin. The campground, alive with excitement and seasonal decor, soon became a drive through attraction for the local community.

Finally 4:00 arrived. My daughter's cousins began to show up for trick-or-treat and all the kids had a wonderful time checking out the decorations and trick-or-treating for candy.

After trick-or-treating the kids were energized. They ran around in the dark woods trying to scare one another and squealed with delight. The teens and adults enjoyed roasting hotdogs, brats, and marshmallows around the campfire. At about 9:00 the rain began and it was time to say goodnight.

I was thinking that it would be our last year of trick-or-treating, but our daughter Ams insists she is not too old. She also insists that when she truly becomes too old, she wants to camp, decorate and hand out treats to the kids. The tradition, it seems, will be carried on!

If ever you get the chance to do some Halloween camping, I urge you to give it a try. Yes it can be cold, wet and even once and a while snow. But the fun is worth the extra bundling up, and you can always keep the campfire burning!

That's all for now, let's get outdoors and keep our wild places wild!
