Loew Lake Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail

My favorite tree, the maple, appears in abundant supply on the Loew Lake Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (IAT). Located in Washington County, the 4.8 mile (7.7 km) Loew Lake Segment of the IAT meanders through a moderately hilly area with a two brief forays (0.2 miles / 0.3 km and 0.4 miles / 0.6 km) onto Emerald Drive. Highlights of the segment include a cool, breezy corridor of pine trees, views from hilltops, plenty of glacial geology, and wonderful views of Holy Hill.

After parking at the Emerald Drive parking area, I headed towards the northern terminus of the segment. A spectacular view overlooking a valley greeted me. Near the north end of the segment I climbed a hill with a few switchbacks, marveling at all the maples, still green in this area. Shortly after reaching the top of the hill I arrived at the northern terminus of the segment with its spectacular view of Holy Hill. The view provided a wonderful teaser to draw me back soon to hike the Holy Hill Segment.

Baby maples as far as the eye can see.

I turned back to complete the portion of the segment to the south. After reaching my starting point, I followed the trail as it dipped onto Emerald Drive for two brief intervals between walks through forested and prairie areas. I enjoyed impressive views from the trail. Toward the southern terminus of the trail the IAT briefy followed the Oconomowoc River providing nice views of the water as well as hundreds of cattails. After a brief walk through another corridor of pines, the segment crossed Highway Q to join the Monches Segment of the IAT. I turned back to retrace my steps back to the Emerald Drive parking area fully enjoying the beautiful fall weather along the way.
