Whitefish Lake Canoe Trip 2023

Welcome to our warmest ever Labor Day Weekend canoe trip in the Sylvania Wilderness. Typically our Labor Day trips feature cold nights. We gather around the campfire warming ourselves. This time we swam and paddled the standup paddle board around Whitefish Lake not really caring about warm campfires. In fact, at some points we could have used a cold breeze!

We sweat buckets doing a double portage laong the 3/4 mile trail from the parking area down to Whitefish Lake. When we finally got on the water the breeze felt good after the sweaty hike to the landing. We were delighted to find our campsite intact and ready. My husband, daughter, sister and I setup camp, then prepared dehydrated lemon chicken orzo for lunch. We had enough time left to paddle around the lake with the kayak and stand up paddleboard, for a little while and soon the day was over.

With temperatures in the 90s and overnight lows in the 70s we were thankful for all breezes arriving to Perch 1 Campsite on Whitefish Lake. One day 2 we took a hike over to Clark Lake and on the sheltered hiking trail away from the breezy lake, we quickly learned exactly how hot the day could be. When we returned we swam, paddled around the lake on our inflatable stand up paddle board, and practiced paddlestrokes in one of our canoes.

Before long, our weekend in paradise was over. We paddled back to the portage, did the double portage in the 90+ degree heat, and loaded up the car. On the way home we decided to try a family restaurant in Boulder Junction. The place was jam packed, and we stood waiting for seating for quite a while.  It was lunchtime, and we were expecting a good family diner lunch.

Imagine our surprise when we were finally seated and learned the menu offered breakfast only. We laughed and ordered breakfast for lunch. Turns out the food was fantastic! I had poached eggs with sauteed tomatoes and brocolli with a crab cake. Sounds expensive but the prices were quite reasonable...and the hollandaise sauce was divine! Before long we were back in the thick of Labor Day traffic on our way home.

That's all for now, let's get outdoors and keep our wild places wild.
