Family Fun in Camp at the Long Lake Recreation Area in the Northern Unit of Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest

Our family had a glorious fall weekend camping at the Long Lake Recreation Area (LLRA) in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. We arrived to a warm, sunny afternoon which cooled quickly when night fell. Owls sung us to sleep and serenaded us again in the morning.

Looking for an easy camping outing for the entire family? The Long Lake Recreation Area in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit offers plenty of easy going family fun. Located at N3450 Division Rd., Cascade, WI, the area offers over 200 car camping sites. The Lake to Lake Bike Trail is an easy bike ride from the campground. The area offers beaches and Long Lake and nearby Mauthe Lake. The campground is about a mile from the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Our family enjoyed a relaxing bike ride along a couple of miles of the Lake to Lake Bike Trail which runs 6.5 miles from Long Lake to Mauthe Lake. Dad and Ams chased their birthday drones around the campsite for fun (Thank you Aunt L!), and I (Mama) took Ams to the beach to watch the sunset and play at the playground.

On a crisp Sunday morning, I took a beauty and solitude break while my family slept in. I enjoyed watching the sunrise from the summit of Dundee Mountain, which happens to be a nearly perfectly formed glacial kame. This is a family friendly trail due to its short length. Our daughter hiked this when she was a toddler. The summit trail is a 1 mile (1.6 km) loop, so the walk from camp to the trailhead took longer than the actual hike.

As always with these weekend getaways, the fun ended all too soon and it was time to head back the world of work and school. That's all for now. Let's get out doors and keep our wild places wild.
