Sometimes the sign is so awesome you just can't walk away without a
selfie. So named for the redhead ducks that nest at Horicon Marsh, the
2.5 mile (4.2 km) Redhead Hiking Trail joined with the 0.5 mile (0.8 km)
Red Fox Trail and the 0.4 mile (0.7 km) Egret Trail make for about 3.4
miles (5.5 km) of easy hiking. While these trails reside at the north
end of the marsh, the Bachhuber Flowage and Quick's Point Trails at the
south end of the marsh, also adjoining loops, make for a similar hike.
Located in Dodge County on Wisconsin State Highway 49, Horicon
Marsh is nestled between Waupun, Mayville and Horicon. Horicon Marsh provides a great hiking spot for migratory bird watching.
There is no fee to hike at Horicon Marsh.
The
trails are wide, easy to follow, well signed, and easy (non-strenuous) to hike. Although portions of the trail cut through stands of trees, much of
the trail meanders through open prairie and marshland. Short and longer loops allow hiking to suit
various levels of ability. Benches scattered along these trails make for
comfortable bird watching. Maps of Horicon Marsh and more information about hiking, snowshoeing, paddling, bird watching, and more can be found on the US Fish and Wildlife Service's website.
